Catalase enzyme breaks down hydrogen peroxide into less-reactive gaseous oxygen and water molecules. Hydrogen peroxide is a harmful by-product of many normal metabolic processes that needs to be converted into harmless substances quickly to prevent damages to cells and tissues.
